Eligibility for Death Benefits – AB 1035 (Perez)
Extends the time periods to start proceedings to collect benefits from 240 weeks from the date of injury until 420 weeks until the date of injury for specified injuries causing death for peace officers and firefighters. The specified illnesses include cancer, tuberculosis, and blood borne infectious diseases. This extended period of time to start proceedings is only effective until January 1, 2019.

Expedited Hearings – AB 1746 (Alejo)
This new law places workers compensation disputes that involve claimants whose employers are illegally uninsured or that involve issues in which claimant’s employment status is disputed, are given priority. This is important to ensure that injured workers who work for uninsured employers have an expedited hearing so they can quickly receive medical care.
