Associate Attorney – Collections & Benefits

Beeson, Tayer and Bodine is a progressive 16-Attorney law firm with offices in Oakland and Sacramento, California. The firm’s practice includes all aspects of Union-side labor and employment law, including representing public and private sector Unions, educators, employee benefit plans, and individual public and private sector employees. Our office has a position open for an associate attorney in our Sacramento office with notable collection litigation and employee benefits law experience. The ideal candidate should have 3+ years of experience working on judgment collection and/or ERISA litigation. Experience in the area of employee benefits law is also necessary. The work involves regular contact with benefit plans and their auditors, local union officials and union members, employers and opposing counsel, and benefit plan Board of Trustees. The candidate will focus on issues related to retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and other employee benefit plans. Job duties include handling ERISA related litigation, including enforcement of contribution obligations, subrogation, post-judgment collection work, and withdrawal liability cases, and representing the firm’s employee benefit plan clients in arbitrations and in state and federal court. Plan administration background is a plus. Dedication to the labor movement, strong writing and oral advocacy skills, attention to detail, and organization and time management are very important. A successful candidate will also be comfortable working with numbers, able to adhere to strict time deadlines, and be capable of handling multiple open cases at a time.

The candidate should be a motivated self-starter with superb judgment and communication skills, and must have the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must have a JD degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member, in good standing, with the California Bar. We welcome applicants with Union-related experience but have also hired attorneys without prior Union experience who want to act on their commitment to worker’s rights.

The Firm offers competitive salary and generous benefits, as well as a congenial workplace. Compensation is commensurate with experience, salary range of $103,000-$113,000 for a 3 to 5 year attorney, and includes an excellent benefit package including employer-paid family medical/dental/vision, profit sharing, 401(k) match, and student loan and commute assistance.
